Miguel Ignomiriello, legendary Estudiantes coach, dies at 99

Miguel Ubaldo Ignomiriello, a seminal figure in Argentine football, died on Friday 7 August at the age of 99. He began his career in the youth divisions of Gimnasia y Esgrima in La Plata and later became the architect of Estudiantes' famed "Tercera que Mata" youth system, which produced the core of the 1965 championship side and the 1968 Intercontinental Cup‑winning team.

Ignomiriello also coached Rosario Central, Uruguay’s Nacional and worked with Argentina’s youth national teams, contributing to the development of several generations of players. He was honoured as Ciudadano Ilustre of La Plata, Professional Distinguido of Rosario and, in October 2025, received the Senate of Buenos Aires’ Personalidad Destacada del Deporte award. At the ceremony he said, "Nunca imaginé algo así, vamos a ser sinceros, me sorprendió," and reflected, "Yo lo único que hice fue trabajar y fijar normas para la práctica del deporte." His death marks the passing of a key architect of modern Argentine football.
