Miguel Ángel Ávila, Argentine actor and historic bookseller, dies at 80

Miguel Ángel Ávila, a prominent Argentine actor, theater director, and bookseller, passed away on August 27, 2026, at the age of 80. His career spanned several decades, beginning in the early 1970s, and he was a member of the Asociación Argentina de Actores y Actrices since 1975.

In theater, Ávila performed in various productions, including ‘Represión – Los barriletes me aprietan’ and ‘Uno nunca sabe’. One of his most notable roles was portraying Pablo Podestá in ‘Pablo y Olinda’. His film credits include ‘Dale nomás’ and ‘Facundo, la sombra del tigre’. As a director, he staged works such as ‘La demolición’.

Beyond the stage, Ávila was highly regarded for his dedication to preserving Argentina's cultural memory through bookselling. He managed the historic Fray Mocho bookstore and later spearheaded the recovery of the Librería del Colegio in Buenos Aires. Reopened as the Librería de Ávila, the establishment is considered the oldest bookstore in the country. In 2023, the Buenos Aires Legislature recognized his contributions by declaring him a ‘Personalidad Destacada de la Cultura’.
