Miguel Salguero Olivares murder trial begins for 2012 UNC student death

The murder trial of Miguel Salguero Olivares began in Durham, North Carolina, regarding the 2012 death of Faith Hedgepeth, a 19-year-old University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student. Olivares faces charges of first-degree murder, rape, and burglary.

Prosecutors allege that Hedgepeth was killed in a fit of rage by a stranger. They claim Olivares left DNA evidence at the crime scene, including on a blood-covered bottle of rum used as a murder weapon, inside the victim's body, and on a note found at the scene. The prosecution argues the crime was not personal but a random act of violence.

During the proceedings, Hedgepeth’s former roommate, Karena Rosario, testified about the harrowing moment she discovered the body in their off-campus apartment. Other witnesses, including Hedgepeth’s niece, provided testimony regarding the victim's character. The defense has challenged the prosecution's narrative, stating that key details have been omitted and that the evidence does not support the charges.
