Miguel Saredi Declares Ecoparque Palermo a National Heritage Site

Politician Miguel Saredi, a Peronist leader from La Matanza, criticised the Buenos Aires city government's handling of the Ecoparque Palermo – the former Zoological Park – asserting that the green space is a heritage asset of all Argentines, not an exclusive Buenos Aires privilege. He warned against privatisation and entry fees for non‑city residents, calling such measures a breach of the national constitution and a division of Argentine citizens.

Archaeologists have highlighted the site’s deep historical layers, documenting that beneath the former zoo lie remnants of a former riverbank, 19th‑century drainage works, railway tracks, service tunnels and artificial lakes. Records from 1893 and 1912 trace the evolution of the zoological complex, which was built atop a former coastal wetland. The research underlines the Ecoparque’s cultural and environmental significance as a buried city within the capital.
