Miguel Uribe Turbay: Colombia marks one year since senator's assassination

Colombia marks the first anniversary of the death of Senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, who died on August 11, 2025, following a shooting attack in Bogotá's El Golfito park.

Investigations by the Fiscalía General de la Nación have linked the assassination to the Segunda Marquetalia, a FARC dissident group. While several individuals have been convicted—including a 15-year-old shooter and an intermediary sentenced to over 22 years—the masterminds remain at large. Authorities have issued arrest warrants for seven leaders of the group, including aliases Iván Márquez and Zarco Aldinever, but international cooperation is hindered by their alleged presence in Venezuela.

Commemorations in Bogotá included religious services and the unveiling of a monument at the site of the attack to honor his political legacy.
