Dominican Republic: PLD and PRD challenge government over police deaths and unfulfilled promises

In the Dominican Republic, political tensions are rising as the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) calls for the National Congress to interpellate Minister of Interior and Police Faride Raful and Police Director Ernesto Rodríguez García. The party expressed deep concern over a high number of deaths occurring during police interventions, noting that 55 deaths were classified as police actions in September 2026 alone. Human rights organizations have reported over 180 such deaths in the first months of the year.

Simultaneously, Miguel Vargas Maldonado, president of the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD), has criticized the current administration, labeling it a “government of promises” that has failed to meet the needs of the population. As part of efforts to strengthen territorial presence, the PRD has completed its organizational structure in the province of Barahona.

In other news, UNICARIBE secured first place in the 2026 Interuniversity Cybersecurity CTF, earning 3,295 points. Additionally, Rehabilitación Filial Barahona is marking its 46th anniversary by hosting a free medical operation in the Enriquillo neighborhood to provide various specialized health services to low-income families.
