Miguel Vargas named American League Player of the Week
Chicago White Sox third baseman Miguel Vargas has been named the American League Player of the Week for his performance from September 14 to 20. This marks his second such honor during the 2026 season.
Vargas recorded a .348 batting average with three home runs, nine RBIs, and two stolen bases over seven games. His performance was highlighted by a strong series against the Cleveland Guardians and a productive game against the Detroit Tigers involving a home run and a stolen base.
The award comes during a historic season for the 27-year-old Cuban athlete. He has accumulated 33 home runs, 31 doubles, 101 runs scored, 88 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases. With these figures, Vargas becomes only the third Cuban-born player in MLB history to achieve the combination of 30+ doubles, 30+ home runs, 100+ runs, and 20+ stolen bases in a single season, joining José Canseco and Rafael Palmeiro.
Vargas' recent surge has also positioned him as a potential candidate for MVP consideration, despite a crowded leaderboard of position players in the American League.
