Miholjdan: Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates Saint Kyriakos
The Serbian Orthodox Church and believers celebrate Miholjdan on October 12, a holiday dedicated to Saint Kyriakos the Hermit. A 5th-century ascetic from Corinth, Kyriakos is revered as a pillar of Christianity and a healer who lived a life of extreme devotion in the desert.
In regional folk traditions, Miholjdan marks the transition from summer to true autumn. The period of warm, sunny days following the holiday is known as ‘Miholjsko leto’ (Miholj summer). Various customs are associated with the day, such as completing outdoor agricultural tasks to prepare for winter while avoiding certain indoor chores like cleaning or using kitchen knives.
Many families celebrate the day as their ‘krsna slava’ (patron saint day), involving traditional rituals with holy bread (slavski kolač), wheat (koljivo), and candles. Folk beliefs also suggest avoiding weddings or major arguments on this day to ensure peace throughout the winter.
