Mijas expands program to combat elderly loneliness
The Mijas City Council and Fundación Harena have renewed their collaboration through the ‘Mijas con alma y SolidarEDAD’ program to combat loneliness among the elderly. The initiative, established in 2024 by the Delegation of Family and Equality of Opportunities, has already assisted more than 40 seniors.
The program’s expansion is supported by a 10,000 euro contribution from Fundación ‘la Caixa’ via CaixaBank. The initiative utilizes a volunteer network coordinated by Fundación Harena to provide weekly two-hour sessions for at least one year. Services include home visits, walks, and group activities such as workshops, games, and communal meals to help beneficiaries build social connections.
Mijas Mayor Ana Mata described loneliness as “one of the great scourges that society suffers from,” emphasizing the need for continued attention. Angie Moreno, manager of Fundación Harena, noted that loneliness impacts both emotional and physical health, highlighting the importance of consistent companionship for those without social support networks.
