Mijas recognized for environmental awareness on its beaches

The municipality of Mijas has received special recognition from the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC), the organization responsible for awarding Blue Flags, for its environmental awareness initiatives on its beaches. In a letter addressed to Mayor Ana Mata, ADEAC commended the council’s commitment to providing sustainable services and promoting the rational use of the coastline.

Mijas currently holds five Blue Flags at La Luna-Royal Beach, Riviera, El Bombo, El Chaparral, and La Cala. The Blue Flag distinction evaluates water quality, environmental education, management, and safety. The municipality also maintains nine ‘Q’ Quality distinctions and nine ‘S’ Sustainability distinctions across various beaches.

Additionally, the region features the Blue Centre designation for El Torreón and the Blue Trail designation for the Senda Litoral coastal path. ADEAC noted the increasing presence of sea turtles in the area, emphasizing the need for ecosystem protection. Mijas is currently engaged in marine flora and fauna conservation through collaborations with organizations such as CREAMAR Málaga and WWF.
