Mijas to build ‘El Burrito’ donkey sanctuary and visitor center

Mijas Town Hall has received the complete project plans for ‘El Burrito’, a new recreational park and sanctuary located in the Vial Sur area of Mijas Pueblo. The facility is designed to provide a retirement home for up to 48 donkeys, which are iconic to the municipality’s identity, as well as space for adult animals requiring recovery or rehabilitation before relocation.

The project, awarded to the company OLUZ, covers a 10,226-square-meter plot with a budget of approximately 39,782 euros and an expected execution period of 60 days. The site will be divided into two main areas: a dedicated animal refuge and a cultural interpretation center.

The refuge will prioritize animal welfare, featuring grazing areas, stables with renewable bedding, quarantine pens, veterinary shelters, and specialized handling zones. The buildings are designed to integrate with the natural landscape using timber, planted roofs, and earthy tones. The second area involves renovating an existing building to serve as an educational and visitor reception center, dedicated to teaching the public about the characteristics and cultural significance of donkeys in Mijas.
