Mika Häkkinen recounts near-fatal 1995 Adelaide crash and decision to return to F1

Former McLaren driver Mika Häkkinen described the 1995 Australian Grand Prix qualifying crash at Adelaide, where a left‑rear puncture sent his car airborne into a tyre wall. The impact fractured his skull, caused internal bleeding and blocked his airway, requiring an emergency tracheotomy and two heart‑restart attempts by FIA medical delegate Professor Sid Watkins and a team of doctors.

Häkkinen recalled the moment he thought he was in heaven before seeing Ron Dennis, and how he was unable to move his limbs. He said the experience forced him to confront a difficult decision about whether to continue racing, describing it as “one of the hardest moments” of his career. Despite the severity of his injuries, he returned to testing a few months later, ultimately deciding to keep pursuing Formula 1.
