Mika Häkkinen warns F1 teams against controversial team orders

Two-time Formula 1 champion Mika Häkkinen has warned racing teams to exercise extreme caution when implementing team orders, noting that modern fan bases are highly reactive and could ‘crucify’ teams that make controversial decisions to influence championship standings.

The warning follows recent tension at the Dutch Grand Prix involving Ferrari and Mercedes. Mercedes successfully managed a driver swap by instructing George Russell to let Kimi Antonelli through, whereas Ferrari faced criticism for indecision regarding Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Hamilton expressed frustration after a strategic delay by Ferrari prevented him from overtaking Leclerc, ultimately costing him a podium finish.

Häkkinen noted that the emotional reactions from drivers like Hamilton are understandable, suggesting that decisions often involve basic common sense regarding point scoring. He emphasized that the immense global following of individual drivers makes the management of team orders a much more sensitive issue than in previous eras.
