A1 motorway explosion involving hazardous materials near Sottrum

A small van carrying hazardous materials exploded and caught fire on the A1 motorway near Sottrum, Germany, early Friday morning. The incident occurred near the Stuckenborstel junction heading towards Hamburg.

The explosion was powerful enough to be heard in the surrounding towns of Sottrum and Stuckenborstel. It caused significant damage, including a large field of debris scattered across both lanes of the motorway and substantial damage to a noise barrier.

Emergency services from Sottrum and Posthausen responded to the scene. Due to the nature of the cargo, which included gas containers and an oxygen tank with a capacity of approximately 600 liters, firefighters initially approached the blaze from a safe distance. The motorway was fully closed in both directions following the blast. The driver was able to exit the vehicle independently and no injuries were reported.
