Mike Babcock appointed head coach of Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers have appointed Mike Babcock as their new head coach, replacing Kris Knoblauch following a first-round playoff exit. Babcock, 63, returns to the NHL for the first time since November 2019.

Babcock brings significant experience to the role, including a Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings in 2008 and two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada. Oilers CEO of hockey operations Jeff Jackson stated that the organization and the players' leadership group sought Babcock for his experience and accountability.

The move aims to secure a championship for star players Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Babcock previously resigned from a role with the Columbus Blue Jackets before training camp following criticism regarding invasive bonding requests. Former player Sidney Crosby described Babcock as an organized coach with strong bench management skills.
