Mike Babcock hired as Edmonton Oilers head coach

The Edmonton Oilers announced that veteran coach Mike Babcock, 65, will take over as head coach in June, replacing Kris Knoblauch. The NHL cleared Babcock of past privacy allegations after an investigation, allowing him to return after a seven‑year hiatus. Babcock becomes the 19th coach in Oilers history and brings a record that includes a Stanley Cup with Detroit (2008), two Olympic gold medals (2010, 2014) and a World Championship (2004).

Team captain Connor McDavid and winger Leon Draisaitl praised the decision, saying the opportunity to be led by a coach with Babcock’s experience is “perfect” for the club. They noted an open and honest meeting with Babcock before his hiring. The Oilers also faced the departure of defenseman Darnell Nurse, who was traded to the San Jose Sharks, a loss McDavid described as a major disappointment for the team.
