Mike Bailey discusses the future of professional wrestling and digital engagement
All Elite Wrestling (AEW) wrestler Mike Bailey, also known as ‘Speedball’, has discussed the evolving nature of professional wrestling and the necessity of digital engagement. Bailey, who identifies as non-binary, emphasized that the industry must move toward becoming an ‘immersive experience’ to ensure future growth.
Bailey argued against the traditional model of characters that only exist during brief television segments. Instead, they advocate for performers to maintain a presence beyond the ring through social media, vlogging, and streaming to cultivate a deeper connection with audiences. This approach moves away from the strict secrecy of ‘kayfabe’ in favor of being open and honest with fans.
Reflecting on their career, Bailey noted that their digital presence became vital during the pandemic and a previous five-year period when they were unable to enter the United States. Having spent over 20 years in the international independent scene, Bailey officially signed with AEW in January 2025.
