Mike Baird resigns as Cricket Australia chair amid BBL dispute
Mike Baird has resigned as the chair of Cricket Australia (CA) following a loss of support from Cricket NSW. The decision stems from a conflict regarding the proposed privatisation of Big Bash League (BBL) clubs, a move that has faced significant opposition from several state associations.
Baird, a former NSW Premier, informed the board he would not seek re-election at the upcoming Annual General Meeting on October 28. While he offered to remain on the board as an independent director, Cricket NSW rejected the proposal. Baird noted that his departure might help ‘reduce the temperature of discussions’ between CA and the states.
Former Australian Test batter David Boon has been appointed as the interim chair. Boon, who has extensive experience in cricket administration and as an international player, will lead the board while a formal search for a permanent successor is conducted.
Despite the leadership transition, CA officials continue to support the privatisation model for BBL franchises. Baird highlighted that the organization is set to report record revenue, profit, and viewership, alongside a 40 per cent increase in participation over the last four years.
