Mike Campbell's Riff Powers Tom Petty's 'Runnin' Down a Dream
Guitarist Mike Campbell originated the descending riff that anchors Tom Petty's 1989 single “Runnin' Down a Dream” from the album Full Moon Fever. Petty recalled playing the riff for producer Jeff Lynne, who joked it might be one of the “last riffs left.”
The song was released on July 29, 1989, reached No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was accompanied by an animated music video directed by Jim Lenahan. At nearly four and a half minutes, it is the longest track on Full Moon Fever.
