Mike D’Antoni to join Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame

NBA coach Mike D’Antoni is set to be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. The honor recognizes a career defined by his influential “seven seconds or less” offensive system, which prioritized a fast-paced game and revolutionized modern basketball by shifting the league toward smaller, three-point-oriented lineups.

D’Antoni’s coaching career includes two NBA Coach of the Year awards: one in 2005 with the Phoenix Suns and another in 2017 with the Houston Rockets. During his tenure with the Suns, he utilized players like Amar’e Stoudemire and Shawn Marion to implement a high-speed attack that challenged traditional big-man-centric play.

Reflecting on his career, D’Antoni noted the importance of player freedom and spacing. He also shared anecdotes from his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, including the origin of a famous photo featuring Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard, which was intended as a lighthearted response to rumors of tension between the two stars.
