Mike Dean sparks controversy with claims of playing games during Premier League matches

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has sparked controversy following revelations on Jamie Vardy’s podcast, ‘Having A Party’, regarding his conduct during matches prior to the introduction of VAR. Dean, who officiated over 500 Premier League games, claimed he and his colleagues would occasionally engage in personal challenges to pass the time, such as attempting to go 20 to 25 minutes without blowing the whistle or seeing how long he could remain within the center circle of the pitch. Dean noted that in one instance, he remained in the center circle for approximately 15 minutes.

The comments have drawn significant criticism from the football community. Former referee Mark Halsey suggested the claims could undermine the perceived integrity of all officials. Additionally, former player Gabriel Agbonlahor criticized the behavior as unprofessional.

In response to the backlash, Dean issued a statement via Instagram, asserting that he always applied the Laws of the Game to the best of his ability and that his intention was never to undermine the integrity of refereeing. He explained his approach was to allow the game to flow by maintaining a high threshold for contact. Meanwhile, officials at Pro Ref have expressed bewilderment, with some noting a lack of verifiable evidence to support the claims.
