Mike Flanagan discusses the key to adapting Stephen King's work

Showrunner Mike Flanagan has discussed the essential elements required for successful adaptations of Stephen King’s work. In an interview regarding the new Prime Video series ‘Carrie’, Flanagan emphasized that while horror is a central component, successful adaptations must also capture King’s underlying humanity and optimism.

Flanagan noted that King is an ‘optimistic humanist’ whose writing contains a fundamental love for human beings, even within his darkest and most nihilistic narratives. This approach has defined Flanagan’s previous projects, including ‘Gerald’s Game’, ‘Doctor Sleep’, and ‘The Life of Chuck’.

Other notable television series that evoke the atmosphere of King’s storytelling include Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’, which utilizes an 1980s setting and supernatural elements, and Mike Flanagan’s own ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, which focuses on psychological horror and family dynamics. Additionally, the German Netflix series ‘Dark’ is recognized for its mystery and cosmic elements reminiscent of King’s narrative style.
