Mike Flanagan distances himself from DC's Clayface film

Writer Mike Flanagan has distanced himself from the upcoming DC Studios film ‘Clayface’, stating that the project is “very much is not mine” and is instead the work of director James Watkins. Although Flanagan originally developed the project as a passion project and wrote an early script, he noted that he has not seen the finished film and has not been involved in its recent development.

The film, which stars Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, is part of the DC Universe’s ‘Gods and Monsters’ chapter and is scheduled for release on October 23, 2026. The production features a screenplay credited to Flanagan, Hossein Amini, and Watkins, with Watkins taking the directorial lead.

Early box office tracking suggests a modest commercial performance for the R-rated body horror film. With a production budget of approximately $40 million, the movie is projected to debut with an opening weekend between $23 million and $33 million. Analysts suggest the film’s seasonal release near Halloween may provide a strategic advantage for its commercial viability.
