Mike Flanagan Plans Fresh Take on Stephen King’s ‘The Mist’ Film

Director Mike Flanagan told Entertainment Weekly at San Diego Comic‑Con that his upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s novella *The Mist* will not be a remake of the 2007 Frank Darabont movie. He said the previous films, including his own recent *Carrie* for Amazon Prime Video, have already been done “spectacularly,” so his new version will pursue a different path and rebuild the story from the ground up. Flanagan emphasized the need to justify another version, noting Darabont’s ending is “jaw‑dropping” and that his approach will be “very different” in how he enters, navigates, and exits the narrative.

The interview highlighted Flanagan’s intent to re‑imagine the horror material rather than retell it, aiming to offer a fresh experience for audiences familiar with earlier adaptations.
