Mike Flanagan plans three-season ‘Carrie’ series for Prime Video

Director Mike Flanagan is developing a new adaptation of Stephen King’s novel ‘Carrie’ for Prime Video. During the Toronto International Film Festival, Flanagan revealed his vision for the project as a potential three-season trilogy, noting that the character possesses a narrative arc that could span three distinct stages.

Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie White, a young woman living under the strict religious control of her mother. To ensure a unique performance, Flanagan intentionally prevented Howell from watching previous adaptations, such as the 1976 classic, to avoid imitating past portrayals. Howell, who was selected from over 1,400 auditionees, described her approach as focusing on the character’s curiosity and connection to the text.

The series is set in the modern era and explores themes of bullying and telekinetic powers. Prime Video executives will monitor viewership numbers following the initial release to determine the budget and production for subsequent seasons.
