Mike Flanagan seeks to adapt Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Tower’
Creator Mike Flanagan has expressed a strong desire to adapt Stephen King’s epic fantasy series, ‘The Dark Tower,’ noting that both he and King are eager to bring the project to the screen as soon as possible.
Flanagan explained that the primary obstacle to the production is a complex legal and rights situation. Because the series involves characters and references spread across various other King novels that have been adapted by different studios, securing the necessary permissions is a lengthy process. He noted that moving these rights can take more than a year due to the involvement of multiple studios.
While Amazon had previously greenlit the project, Flanagan clarified that the company’s immediate priority was his adaptation of ‘Carrie,’ which is a much smaller-scale project. With the production of ‘Carrie’ wrapped, Flanagan continues to work on scripts for ‘The Dark Tower’ while navigating the intimidating legal logistics required to move the series forward.
