Heidi Levine, Washington Post photographer, attacked in West Bank

Heidi Levine, a veteran photographer for the Washington Post, was severely injured during an attack by masked individuals in the West Bank near the village of Abu Falah. The assault occurred while Levine was covering the annual Palestinian olive harvest. Witnesses and Levine reported that she was beaten and kicked for approximately ten minutes, resulting in broken vertebrae, a broken rib, and a severe hand injury requiring surgery.

During the attack, the assailants reportedly stole her camera equipment, telephone, and personal belongings. US Ambassador Mike Huckabee condemned the incident as a ‘despicable act of terror’ and demanded that Israeli authorities arrest and prosecute those responsible. Israeli President Isaac Herzog also expressed his condemnation and offered apologies to Levine.

Israeli police and the Shin Bet have launched an investigation into the incident, leading to the arrest of 10 suspects. While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested that Palestinians or far-left activists might be responsible, the investigation continues. The attack has drawn international condemnation from the US State Department, as well as officials from France, Belgium, and Poland, following separate reports of violence against European diplomats in the region.
