Mike Igini warns 2027 elections will judge Nigeria's institutions
Former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mike Igini, has stated that Nigeria’s 2027 general elections will serve as a critical verdict on the country's democracy, specifically judging INEC, the judiciary, and political actors.
Speaking on Channels Television, Igini expressed concern that Nigeria is increasingly governed by individuals rather than the rule of law, noting that laws are no longer being effectively enforced. He specifically highlighted alleged daily violations of Section 97 of the Electoral Act, which stipulates that a candidate cannot be compelled to support any political party.
Igini also raised alarms regarding election integrity, alleging that politicians have infiltrated National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) lists by inserting fake members to serve as ad hoc electoral officials for rigging purposes. He argued that serving NYSC members remain the best option for election duties due to their accountability. Furthermore, he maintained that Nigeria cannot resolve its economic challenges without first fixing its political processes.
