Mike Johnson pushes SAVE America Act through reconciliation

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced plans to embed the SAVE America Act – which would require voter ID and proof of citizenship for federal elections – in a budget reconciliation package. By using reconciliation, Johnson aims to bypass the Senate’s 60‑vote filibuster threshold and pass the measure with a simple majority, linking the act to a federal grant program that would let states voluntarily adopt the new election‑security standards.

Johnson said the strategy reflects close coordination with former President Donald Trump, who has called the legislation a “national emergency.” While Johnson argues the approach will encourage states to “come to their senses” on election integrity, some GOP members, such as Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, have publicly rejected the plan, insisting the act cannot be placed in reconciliation. Democrats in the Senate are also expected to oppose the effort, raising concerns about its impact on voter access.

If successful, the SAVE America Act could reshape voting procedures nationwide by tying federal funding to compliance with voter‑ID requirements, potentially altering how elections are run across the United States.
