Representative Mike Lawler (R-NY) has defended his legislative record, specifically highlighting his role in negotiating an increase to the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap. During a televised appearance alongside Democratic challenger Cait Conley, Lawler argued that his ability to work within his party and across the aisle has yielded significant results for his district.

Lawler noted that during negotiations for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, he advocated for a higher SALT cap, even threatening to oppose the legislation to secure a better outcome for high-tax states. This effort resulted in the cap being raised from $10,000 to $40,000, a move Lawler describes as a major win for New York homeowners.

Lawler, who is running in one of the nation's most competitive toss-up House races, addressed criticisms that he is too closely aligned with Donald Trump. He maintained that his political relationships allow him to deliver resources to his constituents, noting his involvement in 17 bills that became law during the recent congressional session.
