Mike Leigh suggests ‘Tender Loving Care’ may be his final film

Acclaimed British director Mike Leigh has indicated that his new comedy-drama, ‘Tender Loving Care’, is almost certainly his final film. At 83 years old, Leigh cited physical challenges rather than a lack of creative drive as the primary reason for his potential retirement.

Leigh revealed that he suffers from myositis, a muscle-wasting condition that has left him unsteady on his feet. He noted that while he still possesses the energy and ideas for filmmaking, the practical demands and the time required to produce a new project make it difficult to commit to future work. He expressed uncertainty regarding his physical state in the coming years.

Reflecting on the production of ‘Tender Loving Care’, Leigh praised the cast, including Marion Bailey, Kate O'Flynn, Alice Bailey Johnson, and Paul Jesson. He described the experience of filmmaking as a ‘joyous thing’ but acknowledged the frustration of potentially stepping away from the craft.
