Mike Leigh suggests ‘Tender Loving Care’ may be his final film

British director Mike Leigh has indicated that his new film, ‘Tender Loving Care’, may be his final feature. Appearing via video link at the San Sebastián Film Festival, the 83-year-old filmmaker explained that a medical condition known as myositis, which affects his muscular movement, makes it physically difficult to continue directing.

The film, which is competing for the Golden Shell, is a social drama centered on the lives of social workers and the challenges of aging and caregiving. It follows characters played by Kate O’Flynn, Alice Bailey Johnson, Marion Bailey, and Paul Jesson. Leigh noted that while the film presents a harsh view of reality, it is rooted in compassion.

Leigh, a highly acclaimed director with multiple award wins and Oscar nominations, discussed his characteristic filmmaking process, which involves character development through improvisation rather than a traditional script. He expressed hope for future generations despite the difficult times currently facing the world.
