Mike Leigh wins Golden Shell at San Sebastián Film Festival

The 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival concluded with British director Mike Leigh winning the Golden Shell (Concha de Oro) for his film ‘Tender Loving Care’. The award is particularly significant as Leigh, 83, has indicated that this may be his final film due to health challenges related to myositis.

Leigh also received the award for Best Screenplay. In the acting categories, Kate O’Flynn shared the Silver Shell for Best Actress with Asta Kamma August for ‘Growth of the Soil’. Spanish actor Javier Cámara won the Silver Shell for Best Supporting Actor for his role in ‘5 Minutos Más’.

Other major winners include Amanda Kernell, who received the Silver Shell for Best Direction for ‘Brace Your Heart’, and Ah Biao, who earned the Special Jury Prize for ‘Border’. The festival also marked the end of José Luis Rebordinos’s tenure as director, with Maialen Beloki set to succeed him in 2027.
