Mike Matheson fined $5,000 for roughing Ridly Greig
The NHL Department of Player Safety has fined Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson $5,000 for roughing Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig. The incident occurred during the final preseason game between the two teams.
During the second period, Greig cross-checked Matheson in the face. Matheson retaliated by punching Greig to the ground and striking him again while he was on the ice. While both players received minor penalties during the game, only Matheson received supplemental discipline. The $5,000 fine is the maximum amount allowed under the current collective bargaining agreement without a formal hearing.
This marks the third time Matheson has faced discipline from the league, following previous fines for diving and high-sticking, as well as a two-game suspension in 2018.
