Mike Minogue to run for Massachusetts governor without lieutenant governor
Republican gubernatorial nominee Mike Minogue announced he intends to govern without a lieutenant governor if elected, following the suspension of his running mate Shawn Oliver’s campaign. Oliver suspended his candidacy after being arrested in New Bedford for operating under the influence and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
According to police reports, Oliver’s vehicle struck five parked cars and overturned late Saturday night. While Oliver was hospitalized for injuries, authorities confirmed no one else was seriously injured. During his arraignment on Monday, Oliver pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on his own recognizance.
Minogue stated that because the Massachusetts Constitution provides no mechanism to appoint a replacement or hold a special election for a vacant lieutenant governor office, he will move forward without a second-in-command. He has asked supporters to continue voting for the existing ticket to avoid disqualifying ballots, noting he will ask Oliver to resign if they win the general election.
