Mike Patton inaugurates Festival Cervantino with Mexican classics

Mike Patton, leader of Mondo Cane and vocalist for Faith No More, inaugurated the 54th edition of the Festival Internacional Cervantino in Guanajuato, Mexico. Performing at the Alhóndiga de Granaditas on October 3, Patton’s set blended his sophisticated orchestral project with traditional Mexican music.

While Mondo Cane’s repertoire heavily features Italian classics performed with a large orchestra, the opening night included a significant tribute to Mexican icon Juan Gabriel. Patton performed songs such as “La Llorona,” “Luz de luna,” and “Hasta que te conocí” alongside a mariachi ensemble, creating a cross-genre connection between experimental rock and popular Mexican song.

The festival, which runs from October 3 to October 18, features France as the guest country. This edition emphasizes the decentralization of the festival circuit, moving from solemn venues like the Palacio de Bellas Artes to the open-air, communal atmosphere of Guanajuato.
