Michigan Senate race intensifies as Rogers and El-Sayed clash

The Michigan Senate race between Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has become a focal point of national political tension. Recent polling shows El-Sayed leading Rogers by 7 points among likely voters, though the race remains highly competitive.

Rogers has faced strategic challenges regarding support from the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC. After AIPAC spent over $30 million to defeat El-Sayed in the Democratic primary, Rogers’ campaign reportedly requested the group refrain from running advertisements on his behalf. Advisers expressed concern that visible support from the group could be a liability given Michigan's large Arab American population and voter opposition to continued U.S. aid to Israel. In response, Rogers has launched a ‘Democrats for Mike Rogers’ initiative to appeal to disaffected party members.

Both candidates have also converged on the issue of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Rogers has endorsed a potential one-year moratorium on new data center construction to address public concerns regarding energy consumption, water usage, and farmland preservation. El-Sayed has similarly called for a halt on development until federal-level regulatory guardrails are established.
