Mike Sposa wins 2026 U.S. Senior Amateur amid controversy

Mike Sposa, a 57-year-old former professional golfer, won the 2026 U.S. Senior Amateur at the Baltimore Country Club’s East Course. Sposa defeated Todd White 3 and 2 in the final match to claim the Frederick L. Dold Trophy.

Sposa’s victory has drawn significant criticism due to his extensive professional background. Having competed in 174 PGA Tour events and earned over $1.9 million in tournament winnings during his career, which spanned from 1994 to 2007, his participation in a strictly amateur championship has sparked debate. His eligibility was made possible through a USGA process that allows professionals to have their amateur status reinstated.

With this win, Sposa has secured a position in the 2027 U.S. Senior Open Championship at Oak Tree National in Oklahoma. Following his victory, he traveled to Ireland for the 2026 Walker Cup.
