Christian Gonzalez remains sidelined by injury amid contract talks

New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez has missed recent practices and the team’s preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts due to an injury sustained during a workout. Head coach Mike Vrabel clarified that Gonzalez is physically unavailable following a hard fall while competing for a ball in the end zone, dismissing rumors that his absence is a contract holdout.

Gonzalez is currently in the final year of his rookie contract and is engaged in negotiations for a long-term extension. The financial landscape for the position has shifted recently; Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon signed a four-year, $132 million extension, making him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history at $33 million per year. This new benchmark is expected to influence the leverage and demands in Gonzalez’s ongoing talks with the Patriots.

In addition to Gonzalez, the Patriots are dealing with other roster issues, including offensive lineman Ben Brown, who is expected to miss an extended period due to a leg injury sustained during the preseason game.
