Mike Vrabel retains challenge flag duties despite new NFL rule

The moment occurred after a ruling on a scramble by Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson. While officials initially ruled Richardson down by contact, Vrabel challenged the call. The review overturned the ruling, determining linebacker K. J. Britt had knocked the ball out before Richardson hit the ground, resulting in a fumble recovered by Patriots defensive lineman Isaiah Iton.

This event follows a recent NFL rule change that allows head coaches to designate a staff member to physically throw the challenge flag to save time and reduce sideline congestion. Despite this option, Vrabel stated after the game, “No. I’ll keep the challenge flag,” indicating his intention to continue handling the responsibility himself.
