Mikel Arteta praises Arsenal teenager Max Dowman

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed strong support for 16-year-old Max Dowman, suggesting the teenager deserves more playing time at the senior level. Arteta noted that while it is difficult and perhaps “unfair” to expect consistent performance with limited minutes, he believes Dowman is capable of taking his game “to another dimension” once he receives more regular opportunities.

Arteta highlighted the uniqueness of Dowman’s development, noting that the player has already made 17 appearances across various competitions, including the Champions League, the FA Cup, and the League Cup, before turning 17. This distinguishes his trajectory from previous young players like Wayne Rooney and Aaron Lennon, who had fewer senior appearances at a similar age.

Despite the praise, Arteta cautioned that the player's progression will not be a “straight line up” and emphasized the importance of Dowman understanding his current stage of development and remaining prepared for sudden opportunities.
