Mikhail Kasyanov says Putin won't admit Ukraine invasion mistake

Mikhail Kasyanov, the former Prime Minister of Russia from 2000 to 2004, stated in an interview that President Vladimir Putin recognizes the 2022 invasion of Ukraine as a mistake but is unwilling to admit it publicly. Kasyanov noted that Putin acted on security service reports suggesting Ukraine was weak.

Kasyanov expressed skepticism that the conflict would conclude in the near future, suggesting Putin is encouraged by high oil prices linked to US-Iran tensions and existing disagreements between the US and Europe regarding Moscow. He characterized the conflict as a war of attrition that Putin believes he is winning.

Warning of a harsh winter for Ukraine, Kasyanov urged Western nations to apply psychological pressure on the Kremlin and to urgently provide Kyiv with Patriot missile interceptors to defend against intensifying strikes on civilian infrastructure.
