Mikis Theodorakis: A central figure in Greek music and culture

Mikis Theodorakis is regarded as a central figure in Greek culture and music since the establishment of the modern Greek state. His diverse body of work spans various genres, including classical compositions such as symphonies, operas, ballets, oratorios, and chamber music.

He is internationally recognized for composing the syrtaki rhythm for the 1964 film ‘Zorba the Greek’. Additionally, his legacy includes musicalizing the poetry of renowned authors, including Nobel laureates Pablo Neruda, Giorgos Seferis, and Odysseas Elytis, as well as Yannis Ritsos and Kostas Varnalis.

His film score contributions include ‘Fedra’ (1962) and ‘Serpico’ (1973). In 1970, he received a BAFTA Award for his music in the film ‘Z’.
