Mikko Karmila, influential Finnish metal producer, dies at 62

Finnish music producer, recording engineer, and mixer Mikko Karmila has died at the age of 62. Born on February 3, 1964, in Lohja, Karmila was a central figure in the international expansion of Finnish metal music.

Throughout his career, Karmila contributed to more than 300 albums, often serving multiple roles including producer, engineer, and mixer. He was closely associated with Helsinki’s Finnvox Studios, where his work helped define the ‘Finnvox sound’ that characterized much of the Finnish rock and metal scene during the 1990s and 2000s.

His extensive discography includes collaborations with prominent bands such as Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Stratovarius, Amorphis, Sonata Arctica, Lordi, and Kotiteollisuus. In 1991, he was recognized as Producer of the Year at the Emma Awards, the primary honors of the Finnish music industry.
