Miklós Ligeti discusses potential legal scrutiny for Mihály Varga

Miklós Ligeti, the legal director of Transparency International Hungary, has suggested that Mihály Varga, the Governor of the Hungarian National Bank, could potentially face suspicion of complicity in a crime regarding the controversial Pallas Athéné Foundation. Ligeti noted that the foundation's activities, which involved purchasing artworks, may have lacked a proper legal basis under the National Bank's mandate.

Ligeti also discussed the potential role of the newly established National Investigating Authority (NVVH). He suggested that the authority could take over ongoing criminal investigations from the police or prosecution, specifically mentioning the proceedings related to the Pallas Athéné Foundation. He emphasized that the speed of investigations should not be confused with efficiency and noted that the authority could prioritize significant cases, such as those involving COVID-19 era ventilator procurement or issues with state bonds and private capital funds.
