Miklós Seszták detention extended amid 9 billion forint bribery probe

A Hungarian court has extended the detention of Miklós Seszták, a former Minister of National Development and current KDNP Member of Parliament, until January 30, 2027. The decision by the Budai Central District Court cites risks of flight, concealment of assets, and potential influence over witnesses or evidence.

Investigators allege that Seszták and a former executive of the Hungarian National Asset Management Inc. received over 11 billion forints in illegal advantages between 2015 and 2018. The probe involves alleged bribes related to Volánbusz Zrt. transport and bus procurement contracts. Authorities also suggest a construction group offered to return 10 percent of contract values as kickbacks.

A central point of the investigation involves the alleged storage of 9 billion forints in cash within Sesztáks home safes. While investigators reported finding empty safes during a search, they claim data suggests the money may have been moved prior to questioning. Seszták and his legal team have denied all allegations of wrongdoing, asserting that no such cash existed.
