Milan advances multi‑million‑euro animal shelter overhaul and installs shading sails
The Comune di Milano has finished the first phase of an extraordinary maintenance program at the Parco Rifugio cat shelter. The 350 m² facility, comprising eight rooms, received new electrical, heating and water systems, upgraded ventilation, a new video‑surveillance system and enhanced external lighting. The overall refurbishment of the shelter’s infrastructure cost about €2 million, and work will continue on the adjoining dog shelter until spring 2027. A public tender for a new manager of the combined canine‑feline park was launched on 15 July, with a three‑year budget of over €2.1 million.
In a separate initiative, Milan installed eight temporary shading sails across seven public spaces to mitigate heat‑wave effects. Four sails are already in place, with the remaining four to be erected within hours. The project is funded through a municipal budget amendment and the structures will stay for roughly two months, covering the peak of the summer heat. Selected sites include the Argonne green area, Parco Memorie Industriali, Silla, and several open‑air squares, chosen based on a city‑wide heat‑risk map.
Both projects reflect the city’s effort to improve public amenities, protect vulnerable populations—including animals—and adapt urban spaces to climate challenges.
