Milan birth statistics show rise in double surnames and new naming trends

Recent demographic data from Milan reveals significant shifts in naming conventions and surname usage. In 2025, approximately 18% of children born in the city were given double surnames, a figure substantially higher than the 6.7% national average reported by Istat in 2024 and the 8.6% average for Northern Italy. Additionally, 16% of newborns in 2025 were assigned only the mother's surname.

Regarding first names, the first half of 2026 saw a change in the male popularity rankings, with Tommaso becoming the most chosen name, surpassing Edoardo and Leonardo. For girls, Matilde returned to the top position, followed by Ginevra, while Bianca and Vittoria shared third place. Sofia, previously a top choice, dropped to sixth place.

In 2025, Milan recorded 8,971 births, with a slight male majority of 50.79%. During the first six months of 2026, 4,324 births were registered, with males accounting for 51.23% of the total.
