Milan cemeteries announce extended hours and waste initiatives
Milan has announced extraordinary opening hours for its city cemeteries to accommodate the Commemoration of the Dead. Most cemeteries will be open daily from 8:00 to 17:30, with gates closing at 18:00, through November 2. This includes exceptional access on Monday, October 26, and Monday, November 2.
Specific arrangements apply to certain locations: the Maggiore cemetery side gates will follow standard hours from October 24 to November 2, while the Muggiano cemetery will operate with split morning and afternoon shifts. The Sacrario dei Caduti will remain closed due to ongoing conservation restoration work by the Municipality of Milan.
To manage the influx of visitors, private vehicle access with specific authorization will be permitted in all cemeteries on Sunday, November 1, and Monday, November 2, between 9:00 and 12:00, except at the Bruzzano, Greco, and Monumentale cemeteries, where access is restricted to vehicles with disability permits.
In a separate initiative to promote cleanliness and proper waste separation, operators at the San Michele cemetery are distributing 500 free cleaning kits, including small brooms and dustpans. This program, a collaboration between the cemetery services department and Eureka Srl, aims to encourage visitors to correctly sort waste such as dried flowers, plastic, and glass.
