Milan center-left prepares for mayoral succession primaries

The center-left coalition in Milan is preparing for primary elections, expected to take place between January and February, to determine a successor to Mayor Beppe Sala for the 2027 administrative elections.

The process is currently characterized by a lack of a single unifying figure, with between six and eight potential candidates depending on the participation of the Five Star Movement and Italia Viva. Organizational steps are set to begin in September with the drafting of rules and a shared document of intent.

Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein has opted not to intervene directly in the local contest to focus on national politics, leaving the selection process to be managed by metropolitan federations and allied forces. The upcoming Festa dell’Unità in September will serve as an initial political test for the various involved parties.
